Catalogo alfabetico de apellidos: List of Chinese surnames

Facsimile of the Catalogo alfabetico de apellidos
The following is the list of Chinese surnames in the Catalogo alfabetico de apellidos (Alphabetical catalog of surnames), a book of last names made as per Governor General Narciso Claveria's decree dated November 21, 1849. See if you can find yours in a list of more than 270 surnames! (The list was compiled and encoded by Hector Santos.)

Note: Through time, last names may have changed by one or more letters. It is likely that your last name is a derivative of the surname listed in the catalog. Also, more common surnames such as Cruz and Santos were excluded by Claveria's decree to reduce the "confusion."

  1. Hi. I am a Tiongson descendant. A few months ago, I started to dig deeper on my roots. I discovered a lot of interesting facts about my Chinese ancestors.
According to our ancestry book authored by Mr Arturo Tiongson Olmos, our first ancestor to adopt the Tiongson family name is Don Tomas Tiongson ,son of Ti Ong Son - a descendant of Ti Hsin, the last emperor of the Shang dynasty. He was sent by the Empress Dowager to survey the archipelago. Because of some circumstances following the decrees of the Spanish colonial government, he adopted a Christian name (Tomas) and used his father's full name as his surname perhaps to remind the future generations of his true identity. He married Doña Basilia Gatchalian, daughter of the chieftain of Li-Han - Gat Chulian. He had seven children with her but when ordered by the government to be deported back to China, he was forced to leave her bringing with him four of their children and leaving with her in the Philippines three of their sons- Santiago, Anastacio, and Anacleto.

  2. Is 'Nique' also a Chinese Last name? My great grandfather is full blooded Chinese, he was born in the 1920's. He was baptised with a Christian name and his godparents' lastname, 'Miguel Odiver'. My grandmother told me that my great grandfather's original family name is 'Nique'.
